Her original name is Katherine von Drachenberg, born March 8, 1982 in Monte Morelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. She was born to missionaries Rene Drachenberg (father) and Sylvia Galeano (mother).

Her father is of German descent while her mother is of Italian-Spanish descent. She has a brother Michael Drachenberg and a sister Karoline Drachenberg. Her family immigrated to Los Angeles, United States, when she was only 4 years old and she learned to play the piano from her grandmother when she was 6 years old.

Heavily influenced by Latin American culture in Los Angeles, Kat Von D developed an interest in tattoo art and punk rock at the age of 12. She became an avid fan of rock bands like the Ramones, Misfits, and others.
