Meet Sonia Azad from WFAA

Sonia Azad was born on September 17,1982 and is of Persian descent. She attended the University of Texas and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. She then transferred to Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she earned a Master of Science degree in journalism. Azad also received a Masters in Law from Northwestern University’s Pritzker’s School of Law.

According to an interview, Azad’s interest in journalism began when she was a child watching the events of the Gulf War on TV. As she watched the reporters on screen, she thought she wanted to be one of them. She may not currently be a war correspondent, but Azad has proven her tenacity by pursuing her dreams of becoming a journalist.

Before joining the WFAA family, Azad reported for television stations in San Diego, Chicago, Waco, Texas, and College Station, also in Texas. She covered the 2008 presidential election between Obama and McCain for American University’s WAMU radio station.

Azad’s other on-site reporting assignments included: Covering the medical aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall in Texas on August 25, 2017. She was also at the forefront of reporting when US Army veteran Micah Johnson opened fire on a group of police officers in Dallas Texas on July 7, 2016, killing five and injuring nine others.

In July 2012, Azad, along with co-anchor Demond Fernandez, traveled to Aurora, Colorado to cover the mass shooting at a movie theater.

In 2014, Sonia Azad notably covered Senator Wendy Davis’ gubernatorial campaign in Texas, the Ebola crisis in Dallas, and the news of Mayor Annise Parker’s gay marriage in Houston.

The journalist has proven that over and over again. She’s not one to sit around. She has taken on numerous global assignments, including covering war crimes in Africa and the Balkans, covering Iranians and Afghans seeking asylum in Paris, and covering the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster for Star Television in New Delhi, India.

Azad’s hard work and resilience paid off when she received an Emmy in 2011 for her half-hour special report titled Crossing to India. The following year, she was named one of the top reporters in the state of Texas by the Associated Press Broadcasters. She is also heavily involved in community service and charity work. She serves on the board of directors of the Halo House Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with certain types of cancer.

Is she married, who is her husband or boyfriend?

Sonia Azad’s first and only love after her family is her job. When she’s not traveling the world following the news, she’s in a gym teaching yoga or running a marathon somewhere. While there is no time or space for a significant other right now, Azad has expressed interest in having a child or children with or without a husband.

In 2016, she chronicled a 24-day journey and experience of egg freezing on her blog, where she wrote that some of her friends had gone through the egg freezing process and she had started thinking about it too. While she’s in no rush to have kids, she realized her biological clock was ticking and whenever she was ready, she wanted to make sure she had viable eggs that would eventually make her a mom.

She gave a detailed account of the trip to Egg Freezing and the processes involved, including videos of her injecting herself with hormone-filled syringes, saying the intention of the posts was to encourage women to make plans for their future in of motherhood and also to clarify the mystery that surrounds the process.

In terms of relationships, Sonia Azad mentioned running a marathon in Antarctica seems like a more viable option than getting married. At one time, rumors surfaced that Azad and co-anchor Ron Corning were in a relationship. However, News 8 Daybreak responded to a fan’s question about the two with a tweet of their own stating that no romance is sparking. Azad even posted a photo of herself on set with a life-size stuffed cowboy in September 2017, calling the doll her “new friend.”
